Medical Student Resources
Hello LGBTQIA+ medical students interested in psychiatry! Welcome to the AGLP’s Medical Student Resources page, hosted by the AGLP’s Medical Student Committee (MSC). The MSC has a multifaceted mission to provide pertinent programming and construct a connected community of LGBTQIA+ medical students across the map. This may look like educational sessions from leading researchers or clinicians in LGBTQIA+ mental health fields; a mentorship match program; or discussion panels from medical students and residents. For more information, please email the AGLP Medical Student Committee email at: aglpmsc@gmail.com.

AGLP Mentorship Program
For the 2022 - 2023 academic year, the AGLP Medical Student Committee was excited to roll out a revitalized AGLP Mentorship Program! Our goal was to facilitate the creation of lasting connections and mentee/mentor relationships, as well as career development opportunities for our members. To accomplish this, we created both mentor and mentee applications including factors such as various demographic factors and the importance of those factors; career interests (research, writing, advocacy, etc); the desired role of the mentorship match; personal hobbies; and more.
For resident physicians, we allowed them to both mentor current medical students, as well as receive mentorship from practicing psychiatrists. We kept these applications open for one month in April of 2022, and we were excited to reach out to the 37 mentees and 35 mentors who so graciously agreed to be a part of our mentorship matching process.
Looking forward to the future, we are excited to start to incorporate even more structured opportunities for mentees and their mentors to facilitate and grow their relationships – whether it is through semi-regular emails, ideas for Zoom events, and more! If you have any other ideas on how we can improve the AGLP Mentorship Match, please reach out to us at: aglpmsc@gmail.com
Although we don’t have an official date for the application release at this time (07/2023), please stay tuned on ListServes and AGLP Newsletters for more information on how you can be involved!
And as always, thank you to all who participated! We hope that you strongly consider participating again.

STUDENT TRAVEL GRANTS AVAILABLE
In order to encourage and support medical students and their involvement in LGBTQIA+ psychiatry initiatives, AGLP offers grants to medical students and residents who wish to attend the APA Annual Meeting. The John O'Donnell Travel Grant Award was established to offset costs for students by partially reimbursing expenses related to the APA Annual Meeting. This may include costs for flights, housing, and more.
The AGLP John O’Donnell Travel Grant Award is awarded once yearly through an application process, with applications oftentimes going out around December or January in the months leading up to the APA Annual Meeting. There is not a set amount of awards or monies offered for students; however, on average, each year roughly five students have been selected, with awards not exceeding $500. The number and amount of each award may vary year to year.
Those wishing to apply for this grant should contact the AGLP Medical Student Committee at aglpmsc@gmail.com.
The John O'Donnell Student Grant Fund is supported by donations from AGLP members in order to encourage and support trainees and their involvement in LGBTQ+ psychiatry.
